THE CHALLENGE.
This project consisted of replacing the existing cooling towers for One South Broad that sat on a reinforced structural platform 400 feet above Philadelphia city streets. The immediate challenge for this project was the height and location of One South Broad, but the question was not so much what to do, but how to do it cost-effectively and safely.
THE SOLUTION.
With a bit of ingenuity and cost-saving innovation, our team developed the optimal approach to:
- Prefabricate the structural steel, piping, and cooling tower offsite to reduce the safety risk of building it 400 feet in the air
- Collaborated with the structural steel subcontractor and created a detailed timeline to utilize one helicopter to safely lift the structural steel and 7,000 lb cooling tower sections into position on top of this 25-story building, which provided costs savings back to the project Owner.
